Domain names are getting cheaper. Many companies
are looking to capitalize on the deregulation of the domain
registration process. Some companies are now charging less
than a third of what Network Solutions charges. We expect
prices to drop even further as the competition heats up.
Several companies now sell domain names. Register.com,
the second largest domain registrar, just boasted its millionth
domain name sale. Larger companies, such as AOL are also getting
into the game. If the trend continues pretty soon buying a
domain name will be as easy as buying a Big Mac.
Here are some of the cheapo registrars:
Joker - $40
for 2 years, $20 a year
First
Domain - $50 for 2 years, $25 a year
Nominalia
- $68 for 2 years
Expect more to come. Sooner or later everyone
will have to drop their prices.
So what will Network Solutions do to salvage
lost revenue? They have already announced plans to sell targeted
advertising for whois
searches. A company as large as NSI will manage to stay alive.
