Photoshop Tips: How to Frame an Image

Home > Build > Software > Photoshop

1. A simple technique to get a "Frame" look around your Images:
Getting your images to have a border or framed look is a simple process that can be achieved in Photoshop (even I could do it with my basic knowledge of Photoshop). This can also be used to give the raised button look.

Before: With the Frame look:

This explains one way of implementing this look to a standard image in photoshop 5.0. There are probably more than 2 ways to do anything in Photoshop. This just happens to be a nice and easy way and a quick one at that.

1. First make sure your Image is in RGB mode.

  • After your image is open (or if your starting a new one) go to Image>Mode> and select RGB Color. This will allow you to add Layers.

2. Now Create a new Layer.

  • Go to Layer>New>Layer click OK.
3. Select the New layer and Fill it with the color white. So the entire Image is covered. Make sure you are doing this all in the Layer you just created. If you make any mistakes, remember that you can undo your last move with CTRL+Z.

4. Now go to Select>ALL or (Ctrl+A)
. You should see a dotted line (trail of ants) encompass the image.
5. Go to Select>Modify>Border. A window will pop-up and ask you how much space in pixels to put around your image. A good number is 10 but you can feel free to manipulate it to your needs.
6. Now select the paint bucket and fill the outside selected area of the border in black.
7. Hit Deselect (Ctr+d) and then select the magic wand tool. Using the wand click inside the white area of the Layer and then hit Delete.
8. That's it! Now you have an image that has a nice, even border and an easy way of doing it.
