Photoshop Tips: Text Border

Home > Build > Software > Photoshop

1. Achieve a clean outline around text using Photoshop:
Text images can be used as titles to your web site that stand out from regular text generated using HTML. To help give your text a more distinct look you can add a outline and a shadow in only a few easy steps, thanks to Photoshop of course!

To give you a better idea of the finished product is the image below showing an outlined text on a white background with a drop shadow:

figure one.

This explains one way of implementing this look to a standard image in Photoshop 5.0. There are probably more than 2 ways to do anything in Photoshop. This just happens to be a nice and easy way and a quick one at that.

1. First make sure your Image is in RGB mode.

  • After your image is open (or if your starting a new one) go to Image>Mode> and select RGB Color. This will allow you to add Layers.
  • Select the background color for the image and fill using the paintbucket.
  • For figure 1 I just used a white background (see figure two).

    figure two.

2. Now Create a new Layer.

  • Go to Layer>New>Layer click OK.
3. Select the New layer and Select the Text tool. Begin typing onto the new layer. For figure one I used the earth font which is not available and must be downloaded or obtained from other sources.
4. Now Select the color for the text and while the text is still selected fill in the color using the paintbucket.. For our example I chose white. Note:You might want to click on the eyeball for your background layer to turn it off if you are using colors that will blend together making it hard to see what you are doing. You should have two layers at this point. The first is your background layer and the other is the text now filled with color.
5. Next, while the text layer is still selected, go to Layer>Effects>Dropshadow. A window will pop-up and you will be able to preview the shadow and control its intensity. Click OK.
6. Next, while the text is still selected, select the color of the outline. In our example I chose a blue.
7. After selecting the desired outline color go to Edit>Stroke. A window will pop up and you should choose a width of about two pixels and Location center. Click OK.
8. Now deselect the image (Ctrl+D) and that's it! Now you have an image that has a distinct controlled border complete with a drop shadow.
