Mask - Part 1
The first step was to select the 'Magic Wand Tool' and reduce
the tolerance to around 20 (32 is the default). The lower the setting the tighter
the tolerance, meaning the range of colors selected is reduced. Holding down the
shift key I can add to the rough mask until I've created a good start. Holding
down the 'Alt' key allows you to remove pixels from the mask. As you can see I've
missed areas around the clumps of hair near the ear and the top.

Now select the 'Quick Mask' mode button in the toolbar.
You can also access the 'Quick Mask' by pressing the 'Q' key.
The woman is now covered by a red mask. Now comes the
tedious part. Because of the color complexity of the image we will have to go
in and add/subtract from this rough mask
