Rounding the Corner in Photoshop

Home > Build > Software > Photoshop

Have you ever tried to create rounded corners in Photoshop? In the past I used the - Select - Modify - Smooth tool but the result often looked like this:

As you can see the corners are rough and unprofessional. Not satisfied with the result I did some investigation and found a better alternative using the 'gaussian blur' filter and 'channels.'

The Select - Modify - Smooth - command creates jagged corners

1) Start off with a canvas with a black background. Draw out your design using the rectangle and elliptical marquee tools. Add to various shapes by holding down the 'shift' key.

Note: Use your 'guidelines' and 'snap to guides' to create an even design.

2) Now fill the selection with white using the 'paint bucket tool.'

3) Now press the 'Ctrl - A' and 'Ctrl - C' to select all and copy the selection. Create a new layer - Shift - Ctrl - N. This new layer will be used later.

4) We now need to create a new channel. Select 'Channel' and click the 'add new channel' icon, creating an 'alpha channel.' Press 'Ctrl - V' to add your copied selection into the new channel. Deselect your selection pressing 'Ctrl - D.'
