You
can make money with your content site, and I'm going to tell you how.
There
are advertisers out there willing to pay high CPM. You just need to know how to
attract them. Focus your site to attract visitors from highly desirable demographics,
and you'll have trouble not making money.
The Birth
of the Online Content Industry
The online content industry
has always been an interesting one. Initially, information was distributed freely
between computer enthusiasts and academics. Within a year of the Web going mainstream,
banner ads were born.
The premise is simple. Your site attracts
tons of people who are all interested in a certain topic. Advertisers want to
reach people in that demographic, so they pay you lots of money for a small ad
on your site. Everybody gets what they want and everybody's happy.
Even during the dawn of Web advertising, in 1995 and 1996, small bedroom-based
projects such as Ask The
Builder.com were regularly making multi-thousand dollar advertising deals,
whereas in 2001 even large content companies are failing to deliver. Why is it
that some content sites succeed while others fail? To answer this we need to establish
a set of categories with which to define different content sites.
