You require some form of banner serving software to
serve, rotate and track the impressions and click-throughs. Below
is a list of banner serving software and services.
Free Banner Serving Software!
The following programs are provided free of charge, but there is
a price to pay for getting something free. Don't expect any updates
or support, if you get into trouble. Free software is usually under
constant development, so don't expect them to be 100% bug free,
either. These programs are really only recommended, if you have
some programming skills or knowledge of setting up and debugging
CGI scripts.
BannerFusion
Can be used to serve banners on up to and beyond 1,000 sites, with
up to 100 banners per site. Can also be used as a banner exchange
or pay-per-click network. Seems to offer many other features.
BannerMatic
Has all the usual features, but don't expect updates, as the last
release was July 8, 1998.
DAD
DAD is an advanced website ad management system that has been used
to serve millions of impressions a month in a site. DAD has advanced
targeting capabilities and can target ads by many factors, including
remaining impressions, browser, domain name, number of times a user
has seen an ad, virtualhost-specific environment variables, and
other ads on a given page.
These advanced targeted options are not usually available on banner
serving software costing several hundred Dollars, let alone in a
free program.
Random
Image Displayer
A very simple banner serving program.
Banner Serving Software
I would recommend that you use a banner serving software package
to serve and track your banners. You would need to know how to install
CGI scripts on your server, although some companies offer to install
them for you, for a small fee.
CentralAd Pro:
$595
I use an older version (Pro 3.0J - approx $160.00) of Central Ad's
banner rotation program to manage my advertiser's banners in this
site.
WebAdverts:
$50
WebAdverts can be used to rotate banner ads on your site or for
setting up a "banner exchange" between your site and others.
Banner Serving Services
If you don't have access to a CGI server, or don't
want the hassle of setting up a banner serving program, try one of
these companies. They will serve your banners in your site, either
for a fee or percentage of your banner impressions.
I wouldn't recommend these services, if you are serious
about selling banners on your site. You are relying on someone else's
server to correctly serve and track your banners. What if their server
responds slowly, crashes or the company ceases to trade. With the
last case, you would probably lose all your past data, which would
look very unprofessional.
AdPush
$12.95 per month.
AdRotator
5% of your banner inventory.
