I remember when I was looking for my first web host.
I didn't have a clue where to begin. Every web host provider I visited
claimed to offer the best solution and they were all virtually identical.
That brings me to another point.
Now, if one of these companies had offered honest advice
and all those value added bonuses as part of their package, I would
have stopped my hunt there and then.
If they had educated me, I would have been more inclined
to offer my business to them.
Answers to questions such as:
- Why is this plan the best solution for me?
- How many megabytes of disk space do I really need?
- What does 99.5% guaranteed up-time really mean?
- How much bandwidth do I really need?
- What's the difference between a virtual server and a virtual
host?
- How easy is it for me to upgrade to a larger server?
- How long will I really have to wait to receive an answer from
their technical department? (24/7 support means absolutely nothing,
if it takes them three days to reply to an email.)
Not one single web hosting site that I visited (and I visited dozens!)
offered no-nonsense honest answers to these questions.
With every purchasing decision, the customer (or prospect)
has questions about the product or service that requires answering,
BEFORE s/he makes the decision to commit themselves to making the
purchase.
In the back of every customer's mind, s/he is afraid
that they will make a bad decision when they decide to commit themselves.
That's why it's so difficult to sell.
And selecting your web host is one of the most important
decisions that any web developer can make. It's similar to choosing
a site for your shop in the real world.
These customers and prospects all need the reassurance
that the decision they are making is the correct one. Nobody wants
to look like a fool.
Why do you think word of mouth marketing is so effective?
- If they trust and respect the person who recommends the product
or service to them, they know the recommendation is genuine.
- If they make a purchase and it turns out to be a mistake, they
have someone to take the blame!
