Implementing a Web Site Quality Control
Plan

Step One
The
first step you need to take is to get anyone related to the Web site into the
action. They don't necessarily need to help you write the plan every step of the
way, but they at least need to agree with your plan of action. Do they agree that
targets need to be set on quality? Do they agree on focusing on human/site interaction
as opposed to graphics for a while? This is an important step, so make sure you
can get people onside without any disagreements.
What you
need to measure
There are several things you ideally need
to measure on your site. You can't just count the number of hits nowadays, the
'hype' days of the Internet are pretty much over. You now need results, and not
high figures which indicate nothing. Depending on the role and application of
your Web site, you will find some, if not all, of the following worth measuring:
- Unique visitors per day
- Response Times
- User Routes
- Major downloads
- Page Popularity
- User Actions
- Failures and Errors
Let's
cover each one of these in turn, if only briefly, so you can get an idea of what
you should be looking out for.
