Free E-mail
Systems
Many community sites offer free e-mail to users.
In the early years of the Web, these services were extremely rare since they were
hard to set-up and there wasn't much demand for them. However, once Hotmail
became well-known, many webmasters decided they wanted to offer a similar feature
to attract regular visitors to their site. Another benefit was that they could
serve up adverts throughout the free e-mail system.
In response
to this demand for free e-mail services, many CGI scripts were published to do
the job, and some companies even started 'one-stop shop' sites which would handle
all of your free e-mail concerns for you.
The benefits of
offering free e-mail are that:
- your
visitors may return on a regular basis if they use their free address.
- it's relatively cheap to implement, and easy to maintain.
- if you have
a great domain name, people will want an account.
- you can serve up ad banners
within the free e-mail system to generate revenue or promote your own sites.
Of
course, there are disadvantages too. The down sides of offering free e-mail are
that:
- it can be a waste of server
resources if you host it on your own server (more on this soon), and your bandwidth
bill could rise.
- if you use a remote service, you lose the right to serve
banners on the pageviews generated.
- if your domain is really bad, then it
could be very hard to encourage people to use it.
- you could be held responsible
for any hate mail or spam sent from free accounts.
Not been put off yet? The reality is that in a minority of communities, offering
free e-mail can be a really good idea. If your site has a very loyal fan
base or a really good domain name, then go for it.
